Mountain alder is a medium sized tree that reaches heights of 50-65 ft and can live for up to 100 years. This is a tree that prefers full light and florishes in riparian areas but can also handle drier soils. Mountain alder is a resource for caterpillars as they use the leaves for food. This tree also supports nitrogen fixation in soils through nitrogen fixing bacteria hosted in the tree's roots.
