Critters in the River 06.11.22

Join us at Koppel Farm on Saturday, June 11th from 9 - 11 am for Critters in the River, an exploration of the macroinvertebrates living in and around the South Fork of the Palouse River! We will meet at the Pullman Community Garden at 9:00 am. This is a family-friendly event and all ages are welcome to attend.

We'll kick it off with some discussion of local water quality and the pollutants that affect the health of the river habitat and the animals that live there. Then we'll talk about what aquatic macroinvertebrates are and why they're so important. Bring some lawn chairs or a picnic blanket and relax as you learn all about the critters we'll be finding in the water! Additional seating is also available at picnic tables at the gardens.

On our way down to the water, we'll talk about some of the native plant species that are planted along the river and the importance of the riparian habitat for native wildlife. Then we'll give you a short tutorial on how to catch and handle aquatic macroinvertebrates. Nets and other identification tools will be provided and all skill levels are encouraged to join.

It is not required that participants enter the water. However, we highly encourage that they do! If you'd like to get in the water, we recommend you wear water shoes or waders.
